Beginners Gear

In an effort to be economical and safe at the same time, I have to sacrifice a little in weight to get what is necessary at the price I desire.  Here is the list of my beginning setup.

Backpack
You need to find a pack big enough to carry what you need and light enough to carry it a long time.  Most people buy too big of a pack at first and find they don't need it.  I did that.  I'm still using it because I am cheap and I carry other peoples gear some days.  I chose the Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite 60L.

Sleeping System
You will need to decide on a hammock or tent type setup. Hammocks are comfy but require a place to set up.  Tents are more versatile but leave you on the ground.  Either one can be light weight and warm.  Pay attention to weight, space, and 3 or 4 season.

You also have to decide on what kind of sleeping pad to use, sleeping bag or quilt, and if you need a pillow or not.  Pay attention to temperature ratings and weight.

Water Treatment
You must have a water treatment method.  You should never enter the remote areas without a way to hydrate in case of emergency.  If you are going for days, it would be too much weight to carry all of your water.  Play it safe and buy something that can save your life.

Torch/Flashlight/Headlamp

You will need a light of some kind.  I'm partial to a headlamp so I can be hands free.  It is just preference though. You need to think about batteries.  Will it be rechargeable or run off batteries?  How long will it last?  How long will you probably need it?  Does it have red light or not?  I like the Nitecore NU25.
